The Life and Teachings
of Jesus
A Restatement of the Gospels

181. The Disciples Meet in the Upper Room

12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away; 13and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alpheus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the brother of James.
15Peter stood up among the brethren (the company of persons was in all about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16“Brethren, the scripture has been fulfilled concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry.”
20“It is written in the book of Psalms, 'His office let another take.' 21So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 26And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.

182. Bestowal of the Spirit of Truth

14All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
2And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirita and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
        (Ac. 1:14; 2:2, 4)

a   “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit”—In response to the coming of the Spirit of Truth, the spirit counselor Jesus promised to send after his death. (See Ch. 140, fn. b, Ch. 141, fns. a—e, and Ch. 142, fn. a.)
